Radioactive glycerol, ethanolamine, or choline injected into the vicinity of the cell bodies of rat sciatic nerve sensory fibers is incorporated into phospholipid. Some newly synthesized ethanolamine and choline phosphoglycerides are subsequently committed to transport down the sciatic nerve axons at a rate of several hundred millimeters per day. Most labeled choline phosphoglycerides move uniformly down the axons; in contrast, the crest of moving ethanolamine phosphoglycerides is continually attenuated. These data, as well as differences in the clearance of these phospholipids distal to a nerve ligature, suggest that various classes of labeled phospholipids are differentially unloaded from the transport vector possibly by exchange with unlabeled lipid in stationary axonal structures ; during movement down the axons. The extent of unloading appears to be defined by the base moiety; both diacyl and plasmalogen species of ethanolamine phosphoglycerides exchange extensively with stationary axonal lipids, while most choline phosphoglycerides continue down the axons. Autoradiographic studies with 3H-choline and 3H-ethanolamine demonstrated that most unloaded phospholipid is initially deposited in axonal structures; some of this unloaded lipid is subsequently transferred to the axonlmyelin interface axolemma? ; and then to myelin. Although transported ethanolamine phosphoglycerides exchange more extensively with lipids in stationary axonal structures than do choline phosphoglycerides, at early times more label from 3H-choline is found in myelin. A model to resolve this seeming discrepancy is proposed, wherein a differential topographic localization of phospholipid classes in the membrane of the transport vector allows for a preferential extensive exchange of transported ethanolamine phosphoglycerides with lipids in stationary axonal structures, while choline phosphoglycerides become available for rapid transfer to myelin by a process involving vesicle fusion with axolemma.

With the herb, but a cup 3-4 times a day is reasonably standard. Medicinal teas must be very strong in order to be potent. They frequently taste very bad. The exception to this would be using a very mild herbal tea for infants and children - smaller body mass and weight so teas need to be less strong and , therefore, more palatable for them. If the tea you want to use needs to be used throughout the day make up a quart jar full using 1 tea ball of herb per cup of water, strain after steeping if using loose herbs, and it's ready for use when needed for the day. It will keep safely 24 hours without refrigeration, 2-3 days with refrigeration. Oil infusion: Oil infusions are handy for skin infections, itchy, dry skin, burns, and as ear drops. Take dried herbs, crush not powder ; put enough in a glass baking pan to cover the bottom thinly, and cover the herbs with olive oil. Olive oil will not go rancid so you can make this ahead of time and store on the shelf. Stir the oil and herbs to make sure all herbs are coated with oil, then cover with more oil to at least 1 2 inch. If you have a gas stove with an oven pilot light just leave the pan of herbs and oil in the oven overnight. Alternatively, set the pan of herbs and oil in the sun for about 2 weeks with some sort of lightweight fabric covering it to protect from bugs. Strain the oil out through a cloth with a tight weave, bottle it, and use as needed topically. Salve: Herbal botanical salves are just an oil infusion hardened with beeswax. You need lots of the oil infusion. Put the oil infusion in a glass or stainless steel cooking pot and heat gently. Add chopped shaved beeswax to the warmed oil; usually 2oz beeswax per cup of oil. When the beeswax is melted place a few drops on a saucer, let cool, and touch it. It is too soft add more beeswax to the pot; if too hard add a bit more oil to the pot. The perfect salve should stay hard for a few seconds as you gently press your finger on it then suddenly soften from your body heat. Pour into appropriate containers for use as needed. Decoction: Decoctions are herbs botanicals prepared in boiling water used primarily for compresses and syrups. If you have NO taste buds it can be drunk! Use approximately a heaping palmful of dried, crushed not powdered ; herb per pint of water. Boil together for about 15 minutes, cool, strain and add sufficient water to bring the volume back to a pint. For compresses just soak a sterile dressing in the liquid and apply to the body. Prostaglandins: The three agents [latanoprost Xalatan ; , bimatoprost Lumigan ; , and travoprost Travatan Travatan Z ; ] appear to have similar efficacy. Latanoprost has the most favorable ocular adverse event profile. The non-BAK preservative found in the Travatan Z formulation of travoprost has not shown a significant advantage in terms of ocular side effects. Latanoprost Xalatan ; and bimatoprost Lumigan ; were most cost-effective under a scenario when two prostaglandin products were placed in the Uniform Formulary. A scenario with all three prostaglandin products to the Uniform Formulary UF ; was less cost-effective than any scenario with two agents on the UF. Beta blockers: There is no evidence that the timolol maleate product Istalol or the timolol hemihydrate product Betimol have additional clinical benefits over other timolol products Timoptic, Timoptic XE, generics ; in intra-ocular pressure IOP ; lowering or safety profiles. Betaxolol decreases IOP to a lesser extent than timolol maleate; however, the 1 selectivity of betaxolol may be an advantage in patients with cardiac or pulmonary co-morbidities. Timolol XE remains the most cost effective beta blocker available offering once daily dosing. Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors: Brinzolamide Azopt ; and dorzolamide Trusopt ; appear similar in IOP lowering efficacy. Dorzolamide appears to cause more ocular irritation than brinzolamide; however, burning and stinging disappear rapidly and have not translated into higher discontinuation rates. Dorzolamide timolol Cosopt ; is the only combination product for glaucoma and simplifies the dosing regimen. Alpha 2 adrenergics: Apraclonidine Iopidine ; is used primarily short term for intraocular surgery, while brimonidine Alphagan ; is used chronically. Changing the BAK preservative in brimonidine to a purite preservative and reducing the concentration from 0.2 to 0.15 or 0.1% does not appear to affect efficacy.
