Thus, it seems that forests of medium and rather poor fertility have the best bilberry production both in the southern and middle boreal vegetation zones. Like many earlier studies e.g. Raatikainen 1978, Eriksson et al. 1979, Jppinen et al. 1986 ; the prediction model in this study also indicates that cowberry produces good crops in stands with low density of trees. This is quite obvious since cowberry is a photophilous plant which does not thrive in closed stands Belonogova 1993 ; .
